Plenty going on! First up: there are new songs!
Kenny has been working with Jerry Kee on finishing up an EP of 7-8 songs. But you don't have to wait until it's done to hear the first song to be released (July 14, 2021) off the album as a digital single - a remake of an old song he released on vinyl in 1981 (!): Waiting For the Rain. It has a new 3rd verse and a gorgeous pedal steel part! Stay tuned!
He's also going to the fabled Rubber Room studio in Chapel Hill in July to record a couple of songs. Many of Kenny's favorites have recorded there including Doc Watson, Rhiannon Giddens, Steep Canyon Rangers, Mipso, Mandolin Orange (now Watch House), etc. He'll be working with engineer/producer Jerry Brown.
Until gigs are lined up, you may find him trying out new original songs at Abbey Road on Wednesdays or the Fainting Goat on Thursdays - both in Fuquay-Varina, where he's now living.
Look for future performances with old friend Ron Poythress who is finishing a beautiful album recorded at the Rubber Room featuring Andrew Marlin (Watch House) on mandolin, Joseph Terrell (Mipso) on backing vocals and guitar, Robbie Link on bass, Rebecca Newton on backing vocals, etc.
Banjo update: Kenny picked up a gorgeous handmade open back banjo made by the Pisgah Banjo Company recently at Acoustic Corner in Black Mountain. Plan on hearing some clawhammer banjo at his next gig!
